What is CranioSacral Therapy?
Although this technique is quickly gaining popularity, many people still don’t know what it is. CranioSacral therapy (CST) is an approach with light-touch that releases tension deep in the body to help relieve pain and dysfunction.
How do I know if CranioSacral Therapy is for me?
CranioSacral Therapy can benefit anyone! Our busy lifestyles often leave us feeling stressed and sore. When our bodies are stressed and strained, our tissues begin to tighten which can affect our brain and spinal cord. This can then affect our central nervous system and nearly every other system in our body. CST releases those tensions to allow the entire body to relax and self-correct.
By improving our central nervous systems, this therapy has been shown to naturally reduce stress, strengthen our resistance to disease and enhance our health and well-being.
Because CST is so gentle, it can be very useful in cases where people are suffering from a lot of pain and can’t tolerate deep, or more aggressive techniques.
CranioSacral Therapy has been shown to help with a multitude of pain and dysfunction, including the following:
- Migraines and headaches
- Chronic or acute neck pain
- Stress and tension related disorders
- Motor-coordination impairments
- Post-concussion syndrome
- Chronic fatigue
- TMJ syndrome
- Orthopedic problems
- And many other conditions
Wouldn’t deep massage be more effective?
Deeper techniques are not always better! This brings me back to my very first experience as a patient, receiving CranioSacral Therapy. I loved getting deep massages and dry needling. I thought this was the only way to get great results for my aches and pains. I think back to the gentle pressure being applied throughout my body, and mainly on my head. It was very relaxing!! I however felt this was all it was, just relaxing. How could such a light pressure get rid of muscle tension in my entire body?! As I got off the treatment bed, I felt the most relaxed I had felt in years. I also felt an immediate difference in my muscle tone and in my mobility. I was immediately converted to this new wonderful technique and couldn’t wait to learn more! Now that I see the results on my patients, I love it even more.
What can I expect from a session?
Sessions are typically one hour in length. It will generally take place in a quiet room where you will lie onto your back. The therapist with gently touch various parts of the head and the body to determine your individual craniosacral “rhythm”. This will allow the therapist to determine any areas of dysfunction, where they will focus more of their attention. CranioSacral Therapy is a very relaxing technique that generally brings individuals to a deeply relaxing state. They may also feel a warmth or a gentle pulse in the area being worked on.
